Teen trying to retrieve fishing pole drowns in NJ

MILLVILLE, N.J. - May 9, 2009 The 15-year-old, whose name was not released, was fishing along the bulkhead at Riverfront Park in Millville when he dropped his pole into the Maurice River around 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses say the youth jumped in the water, but began struggling and screaming for help before going under. Millville police soon responded and at least four officers jumped into the water looking for the teen, but their efforts were hampered by poor visibility and river conditions.

The boy's body was found about an hour after he disappeared, and his death was ruled an accident. Authorities were trying to determine whether the boy injured himself when he jumped into the water.
