Scammer picked wrong number to call

NEW YORK (AP) - May 11, 2009

That's the mistake one con artist made when he placed a call to the cell phone of New York Senator Charles Schumer. The call, made using a random call generator, warned Schumer that his car warranty was about to expire. Even people on the "do not call" list or those who don't own cars can get such calls.

Schumer didn't just hang up. He's asking the Federal Trade Commission to investigate such calls. The Better Business Bureau says last year it got more than 140,000 complaints about car warranty calls.
