Among the top local races is the Democratic nomination battle for district attorney in Philadelphia, where DA Lynne Abraham is stepping down after 18 years. Also, mayoral primaries are being held in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Scranton.
Tuesday's primary is open only to registered Republicans and Democrats. Political observers predict most of them won't cast ballots because of a lack of interest.
The hottest race is a three-way fight for the Republican nomination for state Supreme Court. The candidates are Superior Court judges Joan Orie Melvin and Cheryl Allen of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia Judge Paul Panepinto.
The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
