AC Xway tolls fall short of projections

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - May 20, 2009 The South Jersey Transportation Authority raised tolls 50 to 60 percent last year and expected to raise more than $200 million in the first year.

Now the authority expects to bring in less than $180 million because of lighter traffic during the recession.

But the authority says plans to do $270 million worth of construction should be able to move ahead all the same. That's because construction companies have been left scrambling for work because of the slow economy.

Bids for road projects have been coming in lower than anticipated.
