Choosing your cable provider

May 26, 2009 If you live in a high-rise apartment this could affect you. Your building can no longer give one cable company exclusive rights to provide service to residents.

A decision from the Court of Appeals in Washington upholds an earlier ruling that banned exclusive agreements as anti-competitive. The deals involved a company exchanging a valuable service like wiring a multi-unit building for cable in exchange for the exclusive right to provide service to all the residents.

The Federal Communications Commission says cable operators can no longer enter into such deals and existing ones cannot be enforced.

There is a potential downside for some residents, though if your building negotiated really low rates for exclusive service that rate may no longer apply.
