Newark Police say a University of Delaware football player has been stabbed. The attack occurred as the 22-year-old walked near East Cleveland Avenue and North Chapel Street between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Police say four men attacked the player and he was stabbed once in the right rib area and once in the neck area. The player said a friend drove him to Christiana Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police say the player was being uncooperative, but he described on suspect as a heavyset man in his early 20s, about 6 feet tall and 240 pounds with short hair. He said the other men were about the same age, but smaller in stature.
