Time to get a new bag

WASHINGTON (AP) - June 2, 2009

The Washington D.C. Council is set to vote today on a measure that would impose a fee for use of throwaway shopping bags.

Consumers would be charged a nickel a bag, be it paper or plastic.

City officials say the bag bucks generated would go toward cleaning-up local river pollution.

If passed, the bag fee would go into effect in about six months.
