Delivering pizza to Iraq

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. (AP) - June 4, 2009

Retired Air Force Master Sergeant Mark Evans is organizing the effort to give troops in Iraq and Afghanistan a taste of home this Independence Day.

He says 28,000 deep-dish pizzas, packed in dry ice, will be sent to the war zones.

Last year, Evans arranged for a long-distance delivery of 2,000 pizzas to soldiers in harm's way.

He's raising money from companies and private citizens for this year's operation pizza.

He hopes every soldier at nine forward bases in Iraq and Afghanistan will get several slices from Uno Chicago Grill.

DHL Express is handling the shipping.

And MillerCoors is donating 10,000 cases of beer to wash down all that pepperoni and extra cheese.
