Homeless men attacked in Trenton

TRENTON, N.J. - June 4, 2009 - On Wednesday night a homeless man was found brutally beaten and burned inside an abadoned factory on North Olden Avenue. Police say the 50-year-old man was found sitting in a chair and had second and third degree burns on the back of his legs.

Investigators say no trace of acclerant was found, so authorities are trying to figure out how the victim was burned, and who beat him.

The beating happened the same night that another vagrant, John Madden, 58, died of his injuries suffered in a violent beating May 15th at Wiley Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

With two homeless men savagely attacked in a short amount of time, some are wondering if they cases are related, and if they're the victims of some kind of thrill-killers taking advantage of the down-and-out.

At this point, police say there's nothing to indicate the beatings are connected.

People outside the Trenton Soup Kitchen were talking about the attackes.

"It's kids. The little young guys out here, they think it's a game," siad Tony Haile.

Another man, Luther Willis, says opportunists like to prey on homeless.

"You can't be by yourself anymore, you know what I mean?" Willis said, adding it's safer to stay in groups.

Police are hoping video from surveillance cameras may help them investigate the case from Wednesday.
