Hip to new school activity

WILMINGTON, Del. - June 5, 2009 Recess is indoors on a rainy day, but that doesn't matter to a group of girls at the Richardson Park Elementary School. They gave up recess after they got hip to a better way to spend their free time

It is hip hop.

It is a new initiative designed to help kids stay in shape while having fun and learning some lessons about life

"Since we're in hip hop, it teaches us to work as a team," fifth grader Ashley Galindez said.

"We learned how to be friends and we started working together," fifth grader Kah Mills said.

It's Miss Ashley, as she's called, who keeps these girls smiling and working out.

"We only have 30 minutes, but everybody has an opportunity to get their body going, hopefully, we're breaking a sweat and getting a lot of activity out of it," Miss Ashley Sullivan Kirksey said.

To get a lot out of the hip hop lessons, the girls also have to do their schoolwork.

"If you don't have all your homework done and your work handed in, you're not allowed to be in this group," fifth grader Damiah Jones said.

So the girls do work at home, both on their schoolwork and their dance steps. Karina McDevitt says her family is happy she's trying something new.

"They are very proud of me, but sometimes they get mad at me because I practice it in the house and then it makes the house shake," Karina said.

Miss Ashely has a couple of rules for the girls including 'you can't say can't' and 'you have to try.'
