The study, prepared by the United States Global Change Research Program, a joint scientific venture of 13 federal agenies and the White House, found that more butterflies are migrating in the west, and there are heavier downpowns in the midwest and east.

The report concluded that global warming will remain a "severe" problem in the coming years, even if steps are taken to combat heat-trapping gases.

The study, overseen by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, will be posted at www.globalchange.gov/usimpacts.

More heat-related deaths and illnesses are predicted, but fewer people are expected to die from bitter cold temperatures, according to the study.

Higher temperatures combined with air pollution would cause a spike in asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
