New, old cable car put into service

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - June 23, 2009

A new cable car started climbing the hills of San Francisco yesterday.

It took more five years to build based on blueprints that are over a century old.

Car No. 15 is made just like the old cable cars, with materials such as bronze, glass and Alaskan yellow cedar.

It cost San Francisco's transit agency $823,000 dollars.

But officials figure they'll get their money's worth.

The average cable car lasts about 100 years.
