With prices stuck on low and a bleak outlook for the summer lobster season, many lobster fishermen are skirting the traditional sales route. They're cutting out dealers who usually sell lobsters to retailers, restaurants and processors.
Prices for lobster plunged last year to levels not seen in 20 years, leading a growing number of lobstermen to seek customers from the backs of pickup trucks, from garages, and even on Craigslist.
Lobster dealers and retailers have responded with a letter to state officials saying that lobstermen are actually making matters worse for themselves and will drive down lobster prices even more.
