Campbell asks city to acquire former Sears store

The Campbell Soup Co. has increased its efforts to obtain an ornate former Sears store to use as part of an office park development. The Camden-based company last week asked the Camden Redevelopment Authority to use its power of eminent domain to get the vacant city landmark.

The 1927 building is on the National Register of Historic Places, but it has fallen into disrepair.

Campbell spokesman Anthony Sanzio says the company had a $3 million deal earlier this year to buy the building before owner Ilan Zaken stopped returning the company's calls.

Campbell had considered moving from Camden before announcing a 2007 plan to expand its headquarters there and redevelop the nearby land.
