Defense: Officer want to justify beatings

June 30, 2009 12:20:26 PM PDT
Defense lawyers say Philadelphia police want their clients convicted in a triple shooting to justify the beating the men endured upon arrest. The defense says some of the police officers fired over the videotaped beating want their jobs back - and believe convictions will help their case.

Jurors are hearing closing arguments Tuesday in the attempted murder trial of suspects Brian Hall, Pete Hopkins Jr. and Dwayne Dyches.

Defense lawyers suggest that police supervisors and a news helicopter were on the scene last summer because officers mistook Dyches for a fugitive police killer.

Assistant District Attorney Carol Meehan Sweeney argues that jurors should not acquit the men because of the "disturbing" videotape.
