First look at Christiana Mall renovations

CHRISTIANA, Del. - June 30, 2009 - The mall says shoppers have kept coming, despite the downturn in the economy and the dust from the construction.

"We figured things were going to change, the economy was going to rebound. We kept the project right on schedule," said Steve Chambliss of the Christiana Mall.

Chambliss credits the location for the mall's continued success.

Of course, Delaware's tax-free shopping doesn't hurt either!

Lee Janvier knows a good thing when he sees it. The jeweler has been in the mall for 31 years, and says the multi-million dollar renovations are sure to benefit merchants, especially since more are on the way.

"They have the Cheesecake Factory coming in, Nordstrom's, Forever 21, a lot of them are two story units. We're just looking for a great season," Janvier said.

The new food court has been a big hit, with tables just for kids being one of the many new additions.

"They love it. It's the first thing they noticed," said Jennifer Fanelli of Newark. "I think it's beautiful. I can't wait to see it finished."

Other shoppers are looking forward to the new stores.

"This way you don't have to go to other states to get what you're looking for because most of the stores they're bringing in are in Pennsylvania and Maryland, so it will be better shopping in Delaware," said Marjorie Collett of New Castle.

Most of the renovations won't be done unti late fall, just in time for the Christmas shopping season.
