NJ Gov. Corzine wants sports betting OK'd

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - July 3, 2009

After saying several weeks ago that he would support the suit filed in March by state Sen. Raymond Lesniak of Union, the governor filed a motion Thursday in U.S. District Court in Trenton.

It argues that the ban puts New Jersey at an economic disadvantage because it is denied a revenue stream allowed to four other states, including Delaware. Lawmakers there voted in May to legalize sports betting.

Corzine says legalized sports betting is essential to ensure that the casino and horse racing industries in New Jersey remain competitive.
