Fireworks in Quakertown take deadly turn

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. - July 5, 2009 Thousands gathered at Memorial Park on Saturday night to watch an impressive display of fireworks, but something went terribly wrong.

Investigators say a fireworks shell exploded at ground level killing 19-year-old David Allen Walker from West Middlesex, Pennsylvania.

"I'm not sure what his role was, what he was working on, but he was struck by debris from in it in the neck and in the chest. Immediately, the fireworks were ceased; emergency personnel went in, extricated him from the scene and took him to Quakertown Hospital," Cpl. Scott Fogel of the Quakertown Police said.

Walker would later die at the hospital.

Walker worked for Zambelli Fireworks International out of New Castle, Pennsylvania. Police believe the company has worked with the borough for years and never had a problem until now.

The fireworks staging area was isolated from the general public and investigators say the public was never endangered.

"I think a bit of confusion were people not knowing what happened and the fireworks were suddenly shut down and stopped for the night," Cpl. Fogel said.

No one else was injured during this accident.

An autopsy on Walker is scheduled for Monday morning.
