Standoff ends without incident in Voorhees

July 6, 2009 A standoff between an alleged bank robber and police pretty much ended without incident late Monday, but there were plenty of tense moments getting there.

Voorhees police say the suspect entered a TD Bank at Crescent Road and Rt. 73 with his gun drawn. He jumped the counter and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. He fled the bank on a bike but he wouldn't be riding for long.

"Our units responded with Evesham Twp. Police. A canine track ensued which led to a foot chase. The suspect subsequently ran into the Lazboy store," said Detective Sgt. Jerry Bonsall of Voorhees Police.

Police evacuated the employees of the nearby furniture store and the suspect held police at bay for several hours. Investigators tried to make contact through a back door but to no avail. Phone contact failed as well.

Meanwhile heavily armed swat units scaled the building and could be seen from Chopper 6 high above. They eventually warned the suspect that a canine would be let loose in the building but still they got no response.

"A perimeter was established and the Evesham Township swat team made entry and contacted the suspect in the ceiling and he was arrested without incident."

Police later recovered the cash and gun in a field behind the store. The suspect faces armed robbery and other related charges.

Detectives are still trying to learn the identity of the suspect. He gave them a name but there were some inconsistencies with his birth date.
