This is what you call people power

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - July 7, 2009

That's the idea at the University of Kansas.

The school plans to put exercising students to work generating electricity.

Fifteen elliptical workout machines at a student fitness center will be connected to generators hooked into the building's electric grid.

The 15 elliptical trainers will produce about 10 kilowatts of energy a day.

That's about what a student apartment would use.

The Student Environmental Board is picking up the $15,000 tab for the project.
