Afghanistan blast kills 25, including children

KABUL - July 9, 2009 Officials say the bomb was detonated in a timber truck overturned on the side of the road south of Kabul.

Authorities suspect the truck was headed for the capital when it overturned. After police arrived to clear the road, the militants apparently decided to remotely blow up the explosives mixed with timber in the back of the truck. Four police officers are among the dead.

Police say the blast leveled nearby shops and flung pieces of the truck more than a mile away.

In southern Afghanistan, NATO says a roadside blast has killed two of its soldiers.

And in the southern province of Zabul, Afghan and coalition troops battled Taliban militants who attacked a government center, leaving 15 insurgents dead.
