People need to go

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - July 16, 2009

That's the message the AAA Mid-Atlantic has for Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine.

The state plans on closing about half its highway rest areas.

The AAA is asking Kaine to rethink the cost-saving measure.

The AAA says people who are tired behind the wheel or trying to make it to their destination without a bathroom break will compromise highway safety.

State transportation officials say closing the 19 rest stops will save about $9 million a year.
