Pilot hurt while making emergency landing

MAHWAH, N.J. (AP) - July 19, 2009 Rose B. Ganim, of Northampton, Mass., was the only person on board when the plane went down around 10:10 a.m. in Mahwah. She sustained facial and leg lacerations and was being treated at Good Samaritan Hospital in nearby Rockland County, N.Y.

Ganim said the Cessna 170-B single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft developed mechanical problems before it went down in a field near the hotel and a busy highway. No one on the ground was injured, and she was soon pulled out by emergency crews.

State police say the plane had taken off earlier Sunday in Westfield, Mass., and was on its way to Greenwood Lake in nearby Passaic County.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
