Partially naked man shot and killed by police

OLNEY - July 22, 2009 A partially-clothed man was shot and killed after gaining control of an officer's gun. Moments later, police turned their attention to another scene when more shots were fired.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. two 35th District police officers responded to a 911 call from the city's Olney section. When they arrived, they found a man exposing himself in the 6100 block of North Marshall Street.

According to police, the officers ordered the partially-clothed man to get dressed. He did not and instead became unruly, then started struggling with the officers. Police say he grabbed one of the officers' weapons and fired one time without hitting anyone.

Then, we're told, the man pointed the gun at one of the officers and the other fired his weapon. The bullet hit the man in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

As police were conducting their investigation into the Marshall Street shooting, they heard a series of gunshots just up the street.

Police already in the neighborhood because of the first shooting rushed to a park just up the street in search of the source of this new round of gunfire. They sent in the K-9 unit and the SWAT team. Eventually, one man was taken into custody while the search continued for a second.

The two incidents were not connected, but it was definitely a wild night for Philadelphia Police - and a dangerous one at that.

Police have not yet released the name of man who was shot and killed by the 35th District officer. Both officers involved in that struggle were taken to the hospital to get checked out and then released.
