Route 1 closed by deadly crash

A violent two car crash killed one person tonight in Middletown Delaware. 6abc.com TRAVEL LINKS: It happened around 9 p.m. Sunday.

State police say a van was going north on route one over the Roth bridge when it began having mechanical problems.

A tractor trailer traveling behind it couldn't stop in time and rear-ended it. Both ended up in the southbound lanes and caught fire.

Four people inside the van were able to make it out. A fifth person died.

The tractor trailer driver also escaped injury.

Investigators say the southbound lanes of Route one will be closed until sometime between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.
