Mussels invade south Jersey beaches

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - July 27, 2009

The bivalves were about a foot deep on the Washington Avenue beach in Margate.

Mussels also washed up in Ventnor.

Swimmers had to dodge clam worms on the sand in Atlantic City and Brigantine. The worms are harmless but officials say there's an "ick factor" that bothers people.

Officials say they expect the ocean to reclaim the bivalves in a day or two.
