Trying to sell Jesus for scrap

HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) - July 28, 2009

Police say an employee of a scrap yard in Hackensack became suspicious when a man pulled up in a taxi with the 200-pound statue broken into pieces.

Iran Salmon of Newark and Maria Impalli of Hackensack are charged with theft of removable property.

The statue was taken from St. Joseph's Cemetery.

The owner of Cinelli's Iron & Metal Co. has offered to weld the statue back together.
