Killer of Delaware teen on the loose

NEW CASTLE, Del. - July 29, 2009 An apparent random act of violence Tuesday night robbed Clifford Steed, 18, of his money... and his life.

The killing happened at the Georgetown Village Apartment Complex shortly after 10:00 p.m.

Police say Steed was walking from his parents' home in Carriage Run to a friend's home nearby when he was apporached by three men wearing black.

Those men robbed and shot Steed, who made it to a hallway, but died at the hospital.

"It's not fair, it's just kind of hard to take someone's life for a couple of dollars," said Steed's father, also named Clifford.

One woman was taken to police headquarters for questioning, but police say they have no suspects.

This killing is one of four unsolved murders in New Castle County. In all of those cases, police say they need tips from witnesses and informants.

"We're once again pleading with the public because we know we have a number of killers who are on the loose on our streets in New Castle County, and we know that often this is not the first robbery they've committed," said Cpl. Trinidad Navarro of the New Castle County Police.

Police believe Steed happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and so do neighbors who tried to comfort the family Wednesday.

Like his family, Steed's friends are in disbelief that he's gone.

"He was real innocent, you know what I mean? He really didn't do anything to anyone, so when I heard about it it shocked me because, of all the people, why him?" said friend Markeda Brinson.

That's exactly what Steed's mother, Nicole, wants to know.

"I hope to God they find who did this to my child," she said.

The Steed family hopes and prays someone comes forward to help crack this case.
