Philly to garnish wages for back taxes

July 29, 2009 12:04:29 PM PDT
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter says it's time for some city workers to pay up. Nutter says city employees who owe back taxes have 30 days to settle their debt or make payment arrangements before the city starts docking their pay. Nutter says the city will withhold 20 percent of pay checks to cover the debt as quickly as possible.

City officials say about 1,300 city employees are in arrears.

Nutter says the city will also implement a requirement that all job applicants for city jobs pay their back taxes as a condition of their employment.

City officials say the effort to recoup back taxes has already netted about $1 million since late May.
