Body found in river may be pursuit suspect

GLADWYNE, Pa. - August 4, 2009 Investigators say the body is likely that of Robert Jermaine Clark, who went into the river after a foot pursuit on Saturday, August 1st.

Police say the pursuit started on Interstate 76 at the scene of a crash involving Clark. For unknown reasons, he allegedly gave police false information. While a trooper was trying to get proper indentification Clark fled, and the trooper chased him across all four lanes of the highway.

Clark vaulted the barrier, police say, and headed to the Schuylkill River bank in the area of the Lee Tire Curve.

Clark the swam eastward before going under the water.

He could not be found, even after a water search. Police say severe weather hampered the recovery operations the next day.

Around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, two Lower Merion Township employees discovered a body floating near the Flat Rock Boat Launch off River Road. It's about four miles east where Clark entered the river.

The body was taken to the coroner's office, where authorities will work to confirm his identity.
