Drexel University is beginning a national search for its 11th president.

The private university in Philadelphia is looking to fill the job held by Constantine Papadakis, who died earlier this year of complications from lung cancer. He had led the school since 1995.

Drexel officials said Tuesday that a recruiting firm has been chosen to work with a 12-member search committee composed of students, faculty, staff, alumni and trustees. The university expects to begin interviewing candidates early next year, with a decision by spring.

C.R. "Chuck" Pennoni, a former chairman of Drexel's board of trustees, is serving as interim president of the university, which has about 21,000 students.
