Smyrna gets tougher on sex offenders

SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - August 4, 2009

The Town Council voted unanimously Monday to double the distance that sex offenders must stay away from any school.

The state requires that offenders not come within 500 feet of schools, but in Smyrna, offenders will have to stay at least 1,000 feet away.

The new ordinance says Delaware's sex-offender registry system "not adequate."

Town Manager David Hugg says the ordinance "sounds more onerous than it really is." The new law won't apply to offenders who already live in the newly prohibited zones. It will just bar offenders from moving to those areas.

Smyrna's Web site lists 34 registered sex offenders living in the town limits.
