Corzine signs '1 handgun a month' bill

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - August 6, 2009 Gov. Jon Corzine signed legislation Thursday making New Jersey the fourth state to limit the number of handguns that can be legally purchased within the one-month time frame.

The other states are California, Maryland and Virginia.

Corzine says the new law will help keep guns off the streets and out of the hands of gang members.

Nearly one-third of gun crimes in the Garden State are committed with weapons bought in New Jersey.

Mayors of New Jersey's largest cities, including Cory Booker in Newark and Jerramiah Healy in Jersey City, enthusiastically supported the measure.
