Tourists find great deals in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - August 7, 2009

"We've never been here before," explains Laura Donahue, of Milford, Mass. She adds that there are many attractions she and her family haven't had time to visit on this trip that she'd like to see.

Philadelphia Tourism officials have been making a concerted effort to attract budget-conscious travelers this summer.

Meryl Levitz of the Greater Philadelphia Marketing Tourism Corporation says it was easy to get hotels, restaurants and retailers to "jump on the budget bandwagon" and offer special deals and discounts.

Out-of-towners can take advantage of hotel deals including discounts, free Visa gift cards and even free Smartphones with their paid reservations.

Some of deals are great for locals, too, like free parking on the first Friday of the month in Old City, on Sundays in Manayunk, and Wednesday nights along Delaware Ave.

You can get discounted parking at 12th and Filbert streets if you shop at the Reading Terminal Market, one of five Philadelphia attractions that made TripAdvisor-dot-com's list of great free things to do while you're in town.

Also on the list: The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, Independence Hall, Christ Church, and the Tomb of the Unknown at Washington Square.
