1,000 in Del. get checks and pensions

DOVER, Del. (AP) - August 10, 2009

Auditor Tom Wagner says "double dipping" is costing taxpayers $17 million a year.

Wagner says rehiring retired employees sometimes makes sense, but the magnitude of the practice suggests abuse.

He says state agencies should do a better job of training existing employees to take over retirees' jobs, especially since Gov. Jack Markell plans to cut the state's work force through attrition.
