Thieves use blowtorch in jewelry robbery

CENTER CITY - August 17, 2009 It happened at the Gem Mine jewelry store at 108 South 8th St in Center City's "Jewelers Row."

Investigators say the crime happened between Saturday night and Monday morning.

The owner tells Action News that the burglars broke into the vacant building next door and climbed onto the roof.

The burglars then climbed onto the roof of the jewelry store and broke into it by way of the ceiling.

The thieves then used a blow torch, hammer and other tools to get into the back of the safe.

The motion sensor did go off, and security arrived, but didn't see anything.

The owner says that the burglars are professional, and got away with about a half of a million dollars worth of uninsured jewelry.
