Newark woman killed in motorcycle crash

NEW CASTLE, Del. - August 21, 2009 The crash happened at approximately 6:49 p.m. Thursday on Airport Road, adjacent to Commons Boulevard.

A 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Shelly L. Cox-Ellsworth, of Newark, was traveling eastbound on Airport Road approaching a curve in the roadway west of Old Airport Road. The motorcycle was driving at a high rate of speed and, according to police, Cox-Ellsworth failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway.

The Harley crossed the median and traveled into the westbound lanes where it collided head on with a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, operated by Donna E. Lemons, 48, of Bear, Delaware.

Cox-Ellsworth was ejected from the bike. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Lemons sustained minor injuries.

This crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
