Camden police want immigrants to report crimes

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - August 31, 2009 Camden Police Chief Scott Thomson says immigrants in the city are reluctant to report crimes and unsafe housing conditions because they're afraid of being deported.

It's not a new problem. But Thomson says that it's growing as the city attracts more people from Mexico and Central America.

The chief planned to meet Monday with immigrant leaders to tell them that the police force doesn't try to enforce immigration laws.
