Two women attacked at Center City hotel

CENTER CITY - August 31, 2009 Investigators are also trying to figure out whether the man they've arrested is behind even more assaults.

At 3:40 Sunday afternoon a 52-year-old woman from Montgomery, Alabama checked into the Center City Marriott.

She made her way to her room on the 15th floor and was followed by a man on the elevator. Police say she was attacked as soon as she put her key card in the door.

"The male then pushed her to the floor and slashed her face with a knife and demanded money from her."

Lt. Frank Vanore says the woman's life was threatened and when she screamed the man fled with over $300.

The attack was the second at the Marriott during the month of August. An incident on the 6th involved a woman from Sacramento. The man got into her room and stole $25 from her, she was not injured.

Police believe they have their man. He was arrested Sunday night by two Septa police officers.

"I have him listed as Anthony Thomas, 28, of the 5700 block of Hamilton Street in West Philadelphia," said Lt. Vanore.

Police say there is surveillance video which the two Septa police officers saw earlier in the day and recognized the distinctive clothing the suspect was wearing.

"He's charged in both cases with 2 counts of robbery, theft, possession of an instrument of crime and in the weekend case with aggravated assault."

Police are not releasing Thomas' picture or the surveillance video at this time because they believe he may be responsible for other robberies in this area possibly another hotel. They want other victims and witnesses to look at the photo first before making them public.
