Great White Sharks force beach closure

September 7, 2009 The sightings prompted a swimming ban at several beaches for the remainder of Labor Day weekend.

While the waters were closed to swimmers on Sunday, it did not stop holiday revelers from spending the day on the beach.

"We are leaning toward a side of caution in the safety of our tourists and our residents," Leo Dunn of Chatham Beach Patrol said.

Meanwhile, state shark officials were still excited about a first-time feat pulled off on Saturday.

A crew from the state's Division of Marine and Fisheries electronically tagged two great white sharks off Chatham, a first for great whites in the Atlantic Ocean.

Officials said the swimming ban will be re-evaluated no earlier than Tuesday.
