Nation's oldest nuke plant showing its age

LACEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - September 9, 2009 The latest problems - a series of radioactive water leaks - were found just days after the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generation Station got a new 20-year license that environmentalists bitterly fought.

The latest woes followed other leaks that left the Lacey Township reactor's crucial safety liner rusted and thinned.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Agency and the plant's owners insist the plant can operate safely until it is 60 years old. One environmentalist calls the plant a 1969 Buick in a Prius world.

The NRC is looking for better ways to detect and prevent leaks like those at Oyster Creek at all 104 American nuclear plants.
