Police: Delaware girl, 14, helps foil burglary

BRANDYWINE HUNDRED, Del. (AP) - September 10, 2009 Police say Kathy Le locked herself in a bedroom closet and called 911 Wednesday when she heard footsteps coming up the stairs.

"I heard a lot of real loud crashes and that's when I started really, really freaking out," Kathy said.

When police arrived, an officer found a Mark Haller, of Norristown, Pa., getting into a truck backed into the garage and saw a television and power tools that belong to the homeowner.

Haller was arrested and charged with attempted burglary, burglary, theft and possession of burglar tools.

Police say Haller was linked to a burglary on Tuesday too. In that incident, police say Haller walked into a home and when he was confronted Haller said he meant to go into a house across the street, then drove away.

Thanks to Kathy, Haller was caught and police say the 14-year-old did everything right. "She did a great job in what she did because she quickly responded, she called 911, the call taker responded, and the officers were there very quickly," Officer 1st Class John Weglarz of the New Castle County Police said.
