Prison worker sex complaints double

WASHINGTON - September 10, 2009 The report from Justice Department inspector general Glenn Fine says abuse allegations against Bureau of Prisons staff increased dramatically from 2001 to 2008. Claims of sexual misconduct by staff more than doubled, rising 130 percent in the same period.

According to the findings, female prison workers were more likely to be accused of sexual misconduct or abuse than their male counterparts, yet those women who were convicted were less likely to serve time behind bars.

The IG is recommending the BOP update its training and consider alternatives to automatically transferring or isolating prisoners who make sexual abuse allegations.
