Grand slam not enough, Phils lose

September 10, 2009 7:34:35 PM PDT
Ian Desmond homered and drove in four runs in his major league debut and Livan Hernandez pitched into the eighth inning, leading the Washington Nationals to an 8-7 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night. The NL East-leading Phillies, who began the day with a six-game edge over Florida, had won nine straight against Washington. The Nationals won for only the second time in 12 games overall.

Desmond, a 24-year-old shortstop who was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, had a fourth-inning RBI double and a three-run homer to key a five-run fifth. He narrowly missed a home run in his first at-bat, flying out to deep center field.
