Lewes approves smoking ban in parks

The Lewes City Council has approved a smoking ban in the city's nine parks and playgrounds.

Last year, Bethany Beach banned smoking in parks year-round and on the beach and boardwalk during the summer. Ocean View is also considering a smoking ban for its parks.

Lewes Mayor Jim Ford said the ban approved on Monday will likely go into effect in several weeks when the city secures funding for signage and additional cigarette receptacles.

Ford says the ban should help combat cigarette litter and complaints about second-hand smoke. He says a ban on the beach is a future consideration.

Anyone caught smoking in a park or playground in Lewes will first face a warning. Repeated offenders face fines ranging from $25 up to $200.
