Attempted abduction in Fishtown

FISHTOWN - September 16, 2009 It happened along the 2600 block of Tulip Street as a mother was walking her children to school.

Marian Mariero was walking her 7-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son to school, along with her 1-year-old, when a woman approached and insisted 7-year-old Kim was hers.

"I look at her and tell her, 'no, it's my kid.' She tried to grab my daughter's hand, so I grabbed my daughter," Marian said.

Mariero ran with her children and banged on a neighbor's door. The neighbor called police.

The neighbor tells Action News she then confronted the stranger saying, "That's not yours and don't put your hands on the child again."

Mariero says police arrived and drove her around until she spotted the would-be abductor outside of a local supermarket.

Police reportedly questioned and then let the stranger go saying she had mental health problems.

Neighbors of the child's parents are incensed that the woman was not arrested.
