Ministry says no to casino donations

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - September 17, 2009

The decision by New Bethany Ministries comes a week after its longtime director, the Rev. William Kuntze, resigned because he said he was pressured to accept donations from the Sands casino.

He says gambling is destroying the lives of the people the ministry is trying to help.

The board on Wednesday approved a formal policy not to accept any donations of money, or even food, from any gambling operation, including Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem.

The casino sits less than a mile from New Bethany's homeless shelter, soup kitchen and housing for the homeless and mentally ill.
