Five people shot on the streets of Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - September 24, 2009

At least five people have been shot and two of the victims have died.

There must have been something about the 9:00 hour Wednesday night. That's when the bullets starting flying, sending police scrambling - homicide detectives now have their hands full with four murders earlier this week and two more Wednesday night.

In South Philadelphia, an 18-year-old man was shot several times in the chest. He was gunned down shortly after 9:00 in the 2400 block of Morris Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In Southwest Philadelphia, a 20-year-old man was gunned down on the 5400 block of Trinity Street. It happened around 9:30. The victim was shot in the side and twice in the back. He died a half hour later at the hospital.

A triple shooting in Port Richmond could turn into a homicide. One of the victims is in critical condition after being shot in the stomach. This shooting happened around 8:45 in the 3500 block of Emerald Street.

So far this year the city of Philadelphia has seen 220 homicides. At this time last year, there were 240. That's still far below the 2006 total of 405. At the time, that was the highest per-capita murder rate in the country.
