Philly sales tax hike now in effect

PHILADELPHIA - October 8, 2009 The sales tax in Philadelphia rose a penny to 8 percent on Thursday. City officials say the tax hike is a temporary, five-year increase to help plug a gaping budget hole.

Mayor Michael Nutter expects the tax increase to bring in an extra $115 million per year. Nutter says the funds will help keep the police and fire departments working and recreation centers and libraries open.
