Freight train strikes SUV, driver cited

BEAR, Del. (AP) - October 13, 2009

Police say crossing signals were activated when 48-year-old Carolyn Hunte of Bear drove onto train tracks on Route 71 about 6:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Hunte realized she wasn't going to make it and tried to back up, but a car had pulled up to the intersection and stopped behind her.

Police say the train knocked Hunte's Hyundai Santa Fe backward and it spun around and hit the car behind her.

Hunte was taken to Christiana Hospital for observation and police say she was cited for failure to stop at a rail road crossing.

The train's cargo weighed 12,000 tons and the operator wasn't injured.
